Another reason why I love her

Back in July, we took a vacation up north to visit my sister. We were fortunate enough to get to spend time with her husband's family that I just adore!

His sister went in the house with her new born to feed the baby (natural style, if you catch my drift). Mooka had been in there watching tv, which meant they were sharing the couch during lunch time.

Suddenly, Mooka comes running outside, face completely flush and said "I have to talk to you!"

Her next words were priceless, "Mommy, what is she doing to that baby?"

I had to explain how babies get fed from their mommies, which I think helped solidify her decision to not have babies ever.

Fast forward to this week, when we went to the hospital to visit my step-mom. We decided to make a pit-stop on the baby floor before leaving since it's the same hospital where I delivered Baby Bear.

We were able to get a small view through the window of the nursery as there were several families standing around looking at their new loved ones. I had no prouder moment when the following conversation ensued:

Moo (to her brother): Hey, when you were in there they fed you with their boobies.

Me (quietly): No, honey, only Mommy could do that.

Moo (not quietly): O, hey, Mommy fed you with her boob when you were in there.

Baby Bear: I want to go now.

Me: Yeah, me too.

She's not a shy one that little girl of mine!

You're never too young to start

The other night, I took the children on a hunt for pink, blue and green feathers for the Christmas tree. (Why be traditional, right?!) So, after I picked everyone up from school, off we went on our trek to the craft store.

As soon as we walked in the door, Baby Bear says "Mom, can we get some toys." I said, no, I don't have money for toys today. He reaches into his pants pocket and pulls out several coupons cut from the Target toy catalog. He hands this wad to me and announces that he had brought coupons so it won't cost a lot of money.

First - I picked the children up from school and went shopping.

Second - Neither child knew this was the plan.

Third - I wonder how long he has been toting around coupons in hope of that perfect opportunity to use them?!?

Never a dull moment :)

Girl time

Mooka and I began our bonding rituals at the nail salon before she was even out of the womb.

I was about 7 months into my pregnancy when I decided it would be fun to go get a mani pedi at a nail salon in the mall. It was a Saturday, so A. was able to go with me. And off we went.

There was a small wait because it was a Saturday, at the mall.

When it came time for me to get into the chair, A. helped me remove my shoes and climb up into the pedi chair.

And then it happened.

As I sat down…

RIP

That’s right, the back of my maternity shorts blew out, gave up, cried uncle.

Entire.butt.exposure.

The kind nail technicians scrambled to give me one of their aprons to cover up my backside; however, their aprons were small enough to fit their 4’11” frames and not my 5’9” 7 month pregnant Montezuma butt.

Did I mention that it was Saturday at the mall?

A. made a quick run to a store to pick up replacement pants and the chaos settled.

The next encounter we had together at a nail salon happened a couple years ago (Mooka would have been 3.5) when some very sweet co-workers gave me a gift card to again have a mani pedi. I thought it would be fun to take Mooka for a girls’ afternoon out.

Things seemed to start out okay but then crash and burn.

While I was sitting in the pedi chair, she sat nicely on my lap. Then she wanted to stick her foot in the water. Okay, no big deal. Then she started splashing her foot in the water. Then she kicked the technician in the face.

Not cool.

They moved us over to get my nails done. Mooka was sitting nicely in one of the nearby chairs until she discovered that it would spin. So she began spinning and ended up tipping the chair over. And I know I should have been the concerned mommy, but I really just wanted to lock her in a closet until the whole process was over. She again, sat on my lap for the remainder of the manicure but not without first knocking the technician in the head with the table lamp.

We’ve not ever returned to that salon.

Last night, I had promised Mooka that she could get her nails done for Christmas. So we loaded up with Baby Bear, who by the way has excellent salon manners and sat nicely on my lap the entire time though it may have something to do with the looming threat of getting his nails painted if he misbehaved.

Anyway,

She was excellent last night and no one got kicked or hit during the entire process. Her nails turned out super cute and they even put little snowmen on each of her thumbnails. I’m excited to have found a salon that actually invited us back!

Weddings and toddlers

Ah, it's wedding season. Love is in the air. The birds are singing. The flowers are in bloom. And somewhere there is a bride who is going to think she wants your kids in her wedding.

See, single childless folks don't really get kids. They like them to come visit for a few hours, buy them some ice cream, send birthday cards and enjoy their limited interactions. It seems like a very logical idea to invite the young children to be a part of the big day. I for one cringe at the request to bring my children to someone else's home that might possibly have furniture in it, let alone ask them to stand in front of people during such an important event.

My sister recently got married to a wonderful man - the Rice Man. Of course, my children were invited to be the flower girl and ring bearer along with the Rice Man's brother's toddler daughter. That's right - three toddlers front and center. What could possibly go wrong?

Allow me to share our experience...

As the vows began, I felt a tug on my Maid of Honor dress and hear:

Mooka: Um, mommy, I'm done - gotta go - I can't do this anymore.
Me: (GLARE)
Mooka: Yep - can't be the princess anymore.
Me: (MORE GLARING)
Mooka: My sparkly barrette fell out.
Me: Just give it to me.

But no, we won't just stop there. As the sand ceremony was commencing:
Baby Bear: Mommy is that candy?
Me: (GLARE)
Baby Bear: Mommy I want some of that candy!
Me: Honey it's sand.
Baby Bear: Mommy why is it sand. I want candy.
This back and forth dialog went on for what felt like thirty minutes.

And everyone was so comforting after the wedding with nice remarks like, "Your kids are so cute, I didn't hear a thing." Uh huh - sure you didn't.

The reception was equally as fun when both of my children started busting out a booty dance and swinging on poles much like "professional dancers."

Regardless, the wedding was beautiful and we are so excited to have the Rice Man in our family.
